Sponsored by the national geographic air and water conservation fund(in USA), Sun Ruihong from Shanghai University of engineering Science has made the environmental impact assessment of cruise ship at berth and the ecological benefits of implementing ashore power project to reduce pollution and carbon emissions from ships step into the investigation stage. In October, 2014, the above project was sponsored by the national geographic air and water conservation fund, and thus became the first global professional researching project on the assessment of the ecological benefits of implementing ashore power at cruise- berth field. Now, the reference materials collection in the earlier stage has been finished and the on-the-spot investigation has started. Sun Ruihong started the research basing on Shanghai Wusongkou homeport as the empirical region and also planned to cooperate with other Chinese homeports, so as to promote the reducing carbon emission project and the ashore power project.

As the moving castle on the sea, cruise ships are the main multi-function spot for thousands of passengers to do vacationing. Every day a surprisingly large number of wastes are produced, which have become an important source of pollution in the ports along the coast and offshore area. The governments of all the countries pay heed on the pollution and we can take Hongkong as an example. In Hongkong, the amount of the sulfur dioxide emission from the cruise ships is equal to 15% of the total amount from the vehicles, which threatens the citizens a lot near the ports. However the cruise tourism is still increasing with the ration of 9% and in 2020 the Chinese tourism number will be over 4.5 million, which is four times of the number in 2013. Simultaneously the cruise ships are also becoming gigantic. The biggest cruise ship in the world, Allure of the seas from Royal Caribbean, is 2.47 times of the biggest aircraft carrier, Nimitz, in the tonnage. So the pollution from the cruise ships will do more harm to the environment. China, as the biggest carbon-emission country, has promised that by 2020, the carbon dioxide emission ratio per unit GDP will drop about 40%--50%. Under such heavy pressure, MOT has declared that ashore power project is the key project to reduce pollution and carbon emission from ships. Ashore power project can reduce the economic cost, the resources consumption and the carbon emission, which is an important approach to construct green ports and also an important measure to reduce the pollution caused by the oil-fired electricity. In the document of Shanghai three years’ plan of environment protection and construction from 2015 to 2017, it is particularly emphasized to speed up green-ports construction, positively promote the use of ashore power and complete the ashore power experiment in Wusongkou international wharf shore.

Sun Ruihong graduated from the tourism college of Shanghai Normal University with a doctor degree in environment science and technology in 2013. She researched the fields on cruise and ocean tourism, ecological tourism, carbon footprint and carbon management in tourism, etc. she also took charge of 6 projects from Shanghai municipal government and Shanghai education committee, participated 11 relevant projects and published 7 textbooks and monographs.
